Class packs, passes and memberships in booking software
Studios sell access in three main ways: a single class, a bundle of classes, or a membership. Booking software treats the second and third as stores of credit that get used up as clients book. The names differ between products, so check how yours uses them.
The detail here comes mostly from Momence's help centre, checked on 5 November 2026. Other products work along similar lines but not identically.1
The three options side by side
| Drop-in | Class pack | Membership | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the client pays | One class at a time | A set of classes up front | A repeating charge, or a fixed period |
| How the system tracks it | A single payment | A balance of credits | Credits or unlimited use for the period |
| Suits | Visitors and the curious | People who go at their own pace | Regulars |
A drop-in is the simplest. At Momence's front desk, if no pack or subscription applies, staff take the payment at the point of sale instead.2
Packs
Momence says packs and subscriptions both "give your customers prepaid credits". Its guide says a pack suits someone who goes a lot one month and little the next, because it lets them "use the pack's credits at their own pace".1
Packs can also be set to refill when they run out, if the client wants that.1
Memberships
A membership, which Momence calls a subscription, usually renews on a schedule. Momence says the most common form is auto-renewing, charged for example once a month or once a fortnight.1
There are two broad shapes:
- Unlimited. Momence says the customer "can book as many classes as they want".1
- Limited. The customer gets a set number, such as five classes a month.1
Some settings change how a membership behaves.
- Fixed dates. A membership can run between set start and end dates, such as a seasonal offer.1
- Activate on first use. Momence describes a setting that waits to start the membership "until the customer first uses the subscription".1
- One class a day. Momence has a setting that limits a subscription to one class per day.1
- Members only classes. A class can be restricted so it needs booking with a membership.3
What each pass covers
A pass only helps if it's allowed for the class. In Momence, a pack or subscription covers all scheduled classes by default, but appointments aren't included unless you add them.1
Momence's guide says to double check the "what's included" section so a pass covers only what it should.1
Credits can also be priced per class. Momence gives the example of moving a pricier class from the default of 1 credit to 2 credits.3
Private sessions and intro offers
Mindbody's blog says pilates software should "sell distinct pricing options", with examples of private session packs, group memberships and introductory offers. So a studio can run all three side by side. Check your maker's help pages for how each is set up.4
When a client can't book with their pass
Momence's troubleshooting advice is short. Check the membership's status first: expired, no credits left, or not yet activated. Then check the class is on the list of what's included.1
Money and tax
Selling passes and charging recurring fees has tax and consumer-law rules that vary by country. The booking system won't tell you which apply. Ask your accountant, or read the guidance from the ATO, HMRC or IRS for your country.
